So instead of giving up on her goal, she changed it a little. "I got glowing rejections, which were bittersweet," Hammond says. But they just weren't quite ready to make an investment in an unknown author. Publishers liked her voice, her dialogue, her characters. After seven years of writing, rewriting, pitching agents, rewriting some more and submitting her work to publishers, Brewster writer Candace Hammond was not having any luck selling her first novel. ![]()
